What to Do in a Dental Emergency: A Step-by-Step Guide for Fulshear Families
Dental emergencies have a way of happening at the worst possible time. Maybe a tooth started throbbing overnight, a crown came loose during dinner, or your child got injured playing sports. No matter what happened, take a breath. Knowing exactly what to do next can help protect the tooth, ease your discomfort, and prevent the problem from getting worse.
At GLĀZ Dental Studio, Dr. George Galaz and our team provide same-day emergency dental care in Fulshear, TX. Our priority will be to identify the root cause of your symptoms, get you comfortable, and present clear options for your treatment.
And please don’t feel embarrassed if it has been a while since your last dental visit or you have been putting off treatment. There are no lectures here — just a caring team ready to help and support you in your journey.
Here is what to do while you make your way to GLĀZ Dental Studio:
1. Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)
A knocked-out permanent tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. You have the highest chance of saving the tooth if you see an emergency dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.
What to do immediately:
• Pick up the tooth by the crown (the top part), NEVER the root. Touching the delicate root tissues can damage the cells needed to reattach it.
• Rinse gently with milk or water if the tooth is dirty. Do not scrub or use soap.
• Place it back in the socket: If it is an adult permanent tooth and you feel comfortable doing so, gently place the tooth back into the socket. Do not force it. Hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean piece of gauze or cloth.
• Keep it moist: If it won’t slide back in easily, keep it moist. Place the tooth in a small container of milk. Do not store it in regular tap water. Do not let it dry out!
Call GLĀZ Dental Studio at (713) 487-9926 immediately for urgent dental treatment in Fulshear.
IMPORTANT: Never try to re-insert a baby tooth. Doing so could damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. If you are unsure whether the tooth is a baby or permanent tooth, do not force it back into the socket. Keep it moist and call us right away.
2. Severe Toothache or Sudden Jaw Pain
Severe toothaches are often a sign of an underlying infection, deep decay, or a damaged nerve that may require deep fillings, dental crowns, or root canals. The discomfort may come and go, but that does not necessarily mean the problem has gone away. Ignoring severe dental pain can lead to spreading infections, abscesses, or systemic health issues.
What to do immediately:
• Rinse with warm salt water to soothe inflammation and clean the area.
• Floss gently around the hurting tooth to ensure food particles aren't trapped between the teeth.
• Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 10-15 minute intervals to manage facial swelling.
• Take pain relievers: If able, take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, but never place an aspirin directly against your gums, as it can burn delicate gum tissue.
Need emergency pain relief in Fulshear or Katy? Pain is your body’s alarm system. Contact our Fulshear dental team right away so Dr. Galaz can locate the root cause and provide gentle relief.
3. Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Teeth
Not every small chip is a true emergency, but a cracked or broken tooth should still be evaluated promptly. A chipped or cracked tooth can expose sensitive inner layers (dentin or pulp), causing sharp pain when drinking cold liquids or chewing.
What to do immediately:
• Save any broken tooth fragments if you can find them.
• Rinse your mouth with warm water to clear debris.
• Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 10-15 minute intervals to manage facial swelling.
• Protect soft tissues: If the cracked edge is sharp, cover it temporarily with clean dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheek.
• Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until the tooth has been examined.
• Apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling if trauma occurred.
Contact our team if you have pain, bleeding, temperature sensitivity, swelling, or a change in the way your teeth come together when you bite or close down.
4. Lost Crown or Filling
When dental crowns or fillings fall out, the exposed tooth structure becomes vulnerable to temperature sensitivity, pressure pain, and further decay. For these reasons, it is best not to delay treatment.
What to do immediately:
• Retrieve the crown if possible. You can temporarily slip it back over the tooth using over-the-counter dental cement, toothpaste, or denture adhesive until you can get to our office.
• Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
• Keep the area clean and brush gently.
• Schedule a quick visit with our GLĀZ dental team in Fulshear to have the restoration permanently re-cemented or replaced.
Depending on the condition of the crown and the tooth underneath, Dr. Galaz may be able to re-cement the crown or prescribe replacing it with a brand new restoration.
When Is It a Dental Emergency vs. a Medical Emergency?
Some dental problems require immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you experience:
• Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking
• Rapidly increasing swelling of the face, jaw, neck, or throat
• Swelling extending toward the eye
• Severe trauma to the head, neck, or jaw
• Loss of consciousness, confusion, or other signs of serious head injury
• Uncontrollable bleeding from the mouth
Hospital emergency departments can address life-threatening swelling, bleeding, head injuries, and airway concerns. However, definitive treatment for a damaged or infected tooth usually requires a dentist.
For all non-life-threatening tooth injuries, severe toothaches, lost restorations, and chipped teeth, calling an emergency dentist in Fulshear, TX is your best option. Hospital ERs can usually only prescribe pain medicine or antibiotics—they cannot perform dental repairs, root canals, or tooth extractions.
